The Texas Longhorns’ decision to fire defensive coordinator Chad Scott during the 2024 season marked one of the most significant mid-season coaching moves in the program’s recent history — a bold adjustment by head coach Steve Sarkisian as Texas navigated its first year competing in the SEC. Consequently, the firing reflected the higher standards and competitive pressures that come with SEC membership, where defensive vulnerabilities are exploited by elite offenses every single week. This guide covers the Chad Scott firing, the context, and what it meant for the Longhorns’ defensive trajectory.
Background on Chad Scott at Texas
Chad Scott served as Texas Longhorns defensive coordinator under head coach Steve Sarkisian during the program’s transition to the SEC. Furthermore, Scott was responsible for building and coordinating a defense that needed to compete immediately against SEC offenses — programs like Georgia, Alabama, and LSU that consistently develop NFL-caliber skill position talent. As a result of the SEC’s significantly higher offensive quality compared to the Big 12, the defensive challenges Texas faced in 2024 were substantially greater than any previous era of Longhorn football.
Context of the Firing
Texas’s defensive performance in the 2024 SEC season raised concerns about the unit’s ability to stop elite offenses in critical games. Furthermore, Steve Sarkisian made the decision to make a change mid-season — a move that reflects the urgency of maintaining competitive standards in a conference where every game carries playoff implications. As a result, the firing demonstrated Sarkisian’s willingness to make difficult personnel decisions quickly rather than waiting for an off-season evaluation.
Impact on the Texas Defense
Defensive coordinator changes mid-season create immediate challenges for scheme consistency and player confidence. Furthermore, the players must quickly adapt to new personnel, new terminology, and new responsibilities under a changed coaching directive. As a result, Texas’s defensive performance in the weeks immediately following the firing served as a measuring stick for how effectively the program managed the transition and what direction the defense took under new leadership.
Texas Defensive Staff in 2025
Following the Chad Scott firing and the 2024 season evaluation, Texas reorganized its defensive coaching staff heading into 2025. Furthermore, Sarkisian’s recruiting has consistently brought SEC-caliber defensive talent to Austin, giving the new defensive coordinator substantial personnel resources to work with. As a result, the 2025 Texas defense represents the clearest indicator of how the program addressed the defensive shortcomings that led to Scott’s dismissal.
